Enjoy summer fun safely with water, flames, and food

Backyards are for relaxing and entertaining — but pools, grills, and fire pits also bring real hazards. Drowning, burns, and house fires can happen in seconds. Today’s training will help you keep water play and outdoor cooking safe for everyone.
Step 1 — Pool & Water Safety
Barriers & Alarms:Â Install a four-sided fence at least 4 feet tall around pools. Add self-latching gates and pool alarms.
Supervision: Never leave children unattended near water — even for a moment. Assign a dedicated “water watcher.”
Life-saving Gear:Â Keep a reaching pole, ring buoy, and phone nearby.
Swimming Skills:Â Teach kids to swim; enroll in water safety classes if possible.
Chemical Balance:Â Test and balance pool water regularly to avoid skin/eye irritation and harmful bacteria.
Step 2 — BBQ & Grilling Safety
Location Matters:Â Place grills at least 10 feet away from the house, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
Stable Surface:Â Keep grills on a level area to avoid tipping.
Starter Fluid & Propane:Â Use only charcoal starter fluid; never add more once a fire is lit. Check propane tanks and hoses for leaks (soapy water test).
Supervision:Â Keep a fire extinguisher or baking soda nearby (no water on grease fires).
Clean Grates:Â Remove grease buildup to reduce flare-ups.
Step 3 — Fire Pits & Outdoor Heaters
Use a fire pit with a spark screen and place it at least 10 feet away from any structure.
Keep a bucket of sand, water, or a fire extinguisher close.
Never use gasoline or lighter fluid to start or relight a fire.
Fully extinguish embers before leaving — soak with water and stir ashes.
Step 4 — General Outdoor Safety Habits
Keep children and pets away from hot surfaces and flames.
Don’t wear loose, dangling clothing when grilling or near fire.
Avoid alcohol when acting as the grill master or supervising water play.
Check local fire regulations — some areas ban outdoor fires during dry seasons.
Pool, BBQ & Fire Safety Checklist
Fence & alarms secure around pools
 Life-saving tools near water
Grills placed safely & checked for leaks
Fire extinguisher or sand bucket nearby
Clean cooking grates & no accelerants on hot flames
Fires fully out before leaving area
âś… Action for Today
Walk your yard and check your pool area and grilling setup. Secure gates, test pool alarms, and inspect your grill for leaks and grease buildup. Move your fire pit or set clear boundaries if it’s too close to the house.
👉 Tomorrow: Day 7 — Storm & Seasonal Prep. We’ll talk about preparing your home and yard for extreme weather, from securing loose items to safely running generators.
